One Fall Can Change Everything, But It Doesn’t Have To
Sam was heading to the bathroom, just like any other morning. But one moment of dizziness, one slip, and life changed. A broken hip. Emergency surgery. Months of rehab.
Now? He always needs help even just to get dressed.
Falls happen without warning!
Every year in the U.S., 36 million of older adults fall, and many never fully recover.
Why You Should Care?
Every 20 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall in the United States.
That’s 72 deaths every day, many of which could have been prevented.
Falls cause over 3 million ER visits per year and more than 800,000 hospitalizations.
Even non-fatal falls can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, fear of movement, and loss of independence.
And the worst part? Most falls happen at home—and many people don’t realize they’re at risk until it’s too late.
GOOD NEWS: You Can Prevent a Fall Before It Happens - and we’re here to help.
At Project Health Physical Therapy and Wellness, we specialize in fall prevention for older adults. You don’t have to wait for a fall to act. You can take steps NOW to stay safe, steady, and strong.
Are You at Risk?
Have you tripped, stumbled, or almost fallen recently?
Do you feel unsteady when walking or getting out of a chair?
Have you started avoiding stairs or stopped going outside as much?
If you said “yes” to any of these, YOU ARE AT RISK OF FALL and now is the time to ACT.
Use these simple tips to stay steady, stay strong, and keep living life on your own terms.
Keep Moving: Stay active with walking, gentle stretching, or balance exercises. Movement keeps your muscles strong and joints stable.
Do Balance Training: A physical therapist can guide you safely to do balance exercise.
Choose the Right Shoes: Avoid slippers, flip-flops, or shoes without grip. Choose supportive, non-slip footwear that fits well.
Light Up Your Living Space: Use nightlights in hallways, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Brighten stairways and entryways.
Remove Trip Hazards: Clear clutter, electrical cords, and throw rugs from walking paths. Tape down loose mats or get rid of them altogether.
Install Grab Bars and Handrails: Put grab bars in bathrooms and sturdy railings on all stairways. These are essential for support.
Use Helpful Tools: Canes, walkers, or shower chairs can help. A physical therapist can guide you with proper fitting and safe use
Stay Hydrated and Eat Well: Low hydration or poor nutrition can lead to dizziness and weakness. Drink water and eat balanced meals.
Check Your Medications: Some meds cause dizziness or drowsiness. Review your prescriptions with your doctor or pharmacist.
Get Your Eyes and Ears Checked: Poor vision or hearing problems can throw off your balance. Make sure your glasses or hearing aids are up to date.
